ROUTE DECRIPTION


The start location for this ride is the Carlisle Community Centre. It's basically a small library, an arena and a few play fields. It's unusual for the Arena to be open to use the washrooms so please be prepared for an alternative. The first 16 km provides a nice easy warm up for the challenges that lie ahead. The roads are quiet, relatively flat, if anything slightly downhill, and it crosses terrain where agriculture forms the landscape. The farm roads of the country slip away quickly as soon as you get to Parkside Dr. at the 14 km mark. You are now in the town of Waterdown en route to one of my favourite roads, Snake Rd. After you cross Dundas St. all of sudden the road literally falls off the edge of the escarpment. The initial route finding south of Dundas can be a bit confusing until you reach Snake Rd. itself at the 17 k mark so please pay attention to your navigation. Now you'll have a nice easy descent on a beautiful serpentine road where the forest literally hugs the side of the tarmac. It's so close that branches often fall on the road causing you to swerve to miss them. Once you get to Old York Rd. turn right. The intersection here can also be a bit confusing so please pay attention. As soon as you cross over Hwy. 6 turn right onto Old Guelph Rd. You'll have to climb a little ways back up the escarpment to Patterson Rd. where you'll veer left onto flatter terrain. I love this road. It has the feel of a single lane road that's precariously hanging onto the side of the escarpment ready to slip away at any moment. It's completely surrounded by forest and conservation land making it just a beautiful road. Once you get to Valley Rd. turn left and finish your descent to the valley below into downtown Dundas.

Without much time to pause your biggest test of the day comes as you turn right onto Sydenham Rd. Sydenham looks worse than it actually is. It's a 2 km climb, but the gradients ease about half way up allowing you to get your breath. When you see the memorial on the right you are almost to the top. If need be, take a break at the "Clara's Memorial", which is dedicated to Clara Hughes, one of our most celebrated Canadian Olympians. Clara used this climb as a training tool. She did hill repeats, you're only going to climb it once. Some call it Clara's climb. As you veer around the last bend the terrain flattens out. Once you get to Fallsview Rd. turn left. You'll now slip through the rolling terrain surrounded on all sides by working farms slowly inching your way towards one of my favourite roads Crooks Hollow Rd. I think you'll agree this is a perfect road for cycling. It's quiet, small and goes past some old ruins and several waterfalls which can be accessed by way of protected Conservation Areas. Near the end of this road is a good downhill section which, of course, is followed by a good sized out of the saddle climb. Following the short, steep climb you'll come to Hwy. 8 where you'll turn right and cycle 2 km on a fairly busy road all the way to Concession Rd. 2.

You'll shoot straight across the many shallow rollers of Concession Rd. 2 for about 12 km. It's the perfect road for group cycling. When the road starts to wind you'll come to a small downhill section that will have you crossing over a small bridge at the bottom of a valley. A small climb out will be required. A few turns later and you'll be in the town of St. George. You can buy water at the variety store on your left as you come into town. The one thing you'll notice when you get to St. George is the hill heading north out of town. And yes, that hill needs to be climbed. Once gaining the crest of the hill you are back into open farm country. The next 20 km exhibits some of the best cycling this region has to offer. The roads are very quiet, so quiet, in fact, you'll probably share the road with a few farm vehicles going to and from the working fields. This section really does have some great country riding with very little in the way of elevation gain.

As you get to Regional 97 Rd. you can purchase water about 200 m east of Foreman Rd. at a small variety store. The store on Regional 97 Rd. is not on the route proper. The easy nature of the route is now rudely interrupted by your turn onto Foreman Rd. There are a few steep bumps that need to be negotiated as you head towards Concession Rd. 10. Soon you'll find yourself on Gore Rd. where your homeward journey begins. You'll cycle east along Gore Rd., which is fairly quiet, until you reach Maddaugh Rd. where you'll turn left. Once you cross Hwy 6 your day is almost done. The only challenge left can be found on Mountsberg Rd. Here you will need to negotiate two fairly large hills where each one of them has a good lead up so you can gain good speed and attack the climb on the advantage. Once you get to Millburough Line turn right and enjoy the last 9 km on enjoyable roads where there is more elevation loss than there is gain.
